Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OWL)
Designed specifically for Webelos den leaders and their assistants, the Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders course teaches outdoor-related skills through demonstration and hands-on practice. Webelos den leaders should attend this training before conducting Webelos overnight camping with the boys and parents of the den. In addition to covering basic camping skills, OWL training features planning campouts and finding resources. It is taught in conjunction with Introduction to Outdoor Leader skills (IOLS) so Webelos Leaders will be able to learn about area troops and possible combined event opportunities. Note that OWL is required to earn the Webelos Den Leader Award (knot).
Prerequisites:
- Cub Scout Leader Fast Start (Can be taken on-line at the BSA Online Learning Center. Just click on the Training tab, and then click on Boy Scout Fast Start Training.)
- Youth Protection Training (Can be taken on-line at the BSA Online Learning Center. Just click on the Training tab, and then click on Youth Protection Training - English.)
- Webelos Leader Specific Training (offered as part of Cub Scout Leader Specific Training)
Schedule: Arrive Friday, May 9, between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm to sign in. Opening ceremony begins at 7:00 pm. We should finish Saturday evening by 9:00 pm. (Campout required for course completion)
What to bring: Your Scouting Spirit, a desire to learn, and a willingness to have fun. Wear your field uniform and bring note-taking materials and a Webelos Scout Book. Though not mandatory, it is strongly recommended that you bring a copy of the Cub Scout Leader Book. (Also see below for equipment needed.)
