GENERAL INFORMATION
The Order of the Silver Squirrel is an award specific to North Shore District.
The award is available to registered adults or units who render service to Scouting of a significant nature.
The award is made available annually by the district to worthy recipients.
The award is made available annually on the basis of 1 for each 10 traditional units or fraction thereof. The district need not present all the awards allotted each year. In extenuating circumstances, the district Key 3 may authorize additional awards for specific situations.
Though not strictly required, award recipients will generally have provided at least two years of service to Scouting in a registered volunteer role.
A Scouter may not be awarded the Silver Squirrel if receiving the Northern Star or District Award of Merit in the same year (This restriction does not apply to Silver Beaver, which is a Council award.)
It is not appropriate to nominate a Scouter who has already received this award.
It is not appropriate to nominate oneself for this award.
Key 3 not eligible: While in office, a member of the District Key 3 (District Commissioner or District Chair) is not
eligible for this award, and will regain eligibility for consideration as of January 1 in the year following leaving
office (Note: This is based on the calendar year for which the award is based, not when it is announced or presented,
which can occur after January 1 of the following year.). At that time, their prior service as a member of the Key 3
may be considered as a basis for the award. Moving directly between Key 3 roles (i.e. District Commissioner to
District Chair, or vice versa) is not considered a break in office for purposes of Silver Squirrel eligibility.
A professional Scouter or other council employee may not receive this award based on employment service. However, a professional Scouter or employee who also serves as a volunteer Scouter may be eligible, based on volunteer service.
REQUIREMENTS
A registered Scouter may be nominated for this award.
In certain circumstances, a unit may be nominated for this award, with the joint concurrence of the district Key 3.
A nominee must have rendered noteworthy service to Scouting in one of the following ways:
by North Shore District Scouters or units to Scouting - not necessarily confined to within North Shore District.
by Scouters outside of North Shore District to Scouting within North Shore District.
Note: The nature and value of noteworthy service should be enough to be considered significantly "above and beyond the call". It may consist of a single plan or decisions, or for sustained service over an extended period of time, which significantly impacted Scouting.
Consideration is to be given to how nominees exemplify Scouting values in the conduct of their service.
The nominee's attitude toward and cooperation with the district and/or council is to be taken into consideration.
PROCEDURE
Annually, the North Shore district chairman will appoint a temporary special awards committee of at least four but not more than six persons who will consider all candidates and select those to receive the award. Preferably, those selected for the committee will be prior recipents of the award. Candidates for the award may not sit on the committee.
The following procedure is suggested for such presentation ceremonies:
The recipient and spouse should be in attendance at the annual meeting or recognition dinner.
A district and/or council officer should explain the award and its significance.
A suitable citation for each recipient should be read indicating what each has done in Scouting.
The award may be presented at this time with appropriate congratulations.
